Personal Injury Protection or PIP coverage as it is often referred to is coverage required by law under an auto insurance policy that is meant to provide those involved in car accidents with temporary and low dollar amount relief. Or in other words PIP covers a person in a car accident for up to $3,000 in medical expenses and lost wages. So instead of having to work through all the red tape to get the money and help you need after a car accident PIP is meant to kick in and help out and also help those who do not have medical insurance still receive the care they need in the event of an accident.

Who Does PIP Apply to?

While the idea of PIP is that it automatically kicks in to help out victims of auto accidents there are some limitations on who can receive the benefits. PIP is only initiated if the car on the policy is in the accident, and it does not attach to the policy owner. However, it does apply to most passengers in the car that is on the policy, including the named insured, blood relatives, those who live with the insured, those with express or implied consent to be in the insured vehicle, and pedestrians injured by the insured vehicle.

Limitation and Reduction of Benefits.

The other limitation on PIP coverage is to what benefits does the policy extend. PIP benefits are limited to those injuries sustained in the insured vehicle; and it does not extend to people who did not have express or implied consent to be in the vehicle, possessed the vehicle unlawfully, or for injuries sustained by person’s who contributed to their injury. Furthermore, the coverage will be reduced if the injured party has received or is entitled to workers’ compensation coverage or coverage due to active duty in the military.
